Electrical Wiring!!
Everyday we have to work with electricity at home and Electrical Engineering students must be good at solving day-to-day issues related to electricity. So in order to enhance troubleshooting skills of wiring and electrical connections, a Workshop for students is a nice activity.
Extension Board
Extension boards are extensively used in our day-to-day tasks and can be a valuable learning tasks ( with practical application) for engineering students. Students designing their own extension board will be able to understand connections of switches and 3-pin sockets, looping in switches, bulbs and sockets, designing aspect of extension board frame and fitting of switches, sockets to this frame.
Target of Workshop
The target of workshop is to provide a hands-on experience to students to create their own wiring and understand the rules associated with electrical wiring (in India). Understanding Wiring Diagrams, use of tools, looping of switches, cutting, drilling, fitting of switch boards etc. are some of the tasks which students had to do in this workshop.
Conduction of Workshop
The workshop has 2 phase each on different days so that students have a chance to perform tasks on their own. The details of Phase are:
Phase
1 includes discussion with students regarding motive of Workshop and the
initial preparation of panel boards, their dimensions and their wiring
placements. The participating students are divided into 2 groups (or more groups depending on number of students) with each
group having target to create: an Electrical Panel and an Extension Board. The
students are provided with tools (or in our case were taken to College Workshop) for cutting, drilling and finishing of panel
for mounting of Casing-Capping strip, switch boards, switches and sockets.
Team of instructors conducting the Workshop are present to provide guidance at every task performed by
students.
In Phase
2, all the students are provided with electrical wiring diagram of Panel as well as extension
board. Students are asked to issue switches and 3-pin sockets as per their
wiring diagram. After all groups issued their components, next step is to
arrange components on the panels and connect them with wires. After connection
every group is asked to inspect connections along with instructors to check any error.
The Phase-2 session is supposed to complete after each group demonstrates proper working
Panel as well as Extension Boards to the instructors.
Result:
Students completing the workshop will surely find it easier to troubleshoot domestic wiring problem related to switches, sockets, extension boards etc and will be able to relate practical wiring with the syllabus taught in engineering class. The Workshop aims at adding skill to Electrical Engineering students for a better understand of application of Engineering in our life.
